how an earthquake can lead to a tsunami

An earthquake occurs people usually think that you are talking about the ground shaking, but it can also occur on the sea floor. When it does and the earthquake is of high enough magnitude, it shakes the water and causes an outward ripple away from the main impact zone. Because the earthquake occured in a very high magnitude there is a large amount of water on each side and angle of the impact zone heading towards land. When the water gets more shallow, the water is forced up and when it hits land it is large, fast and destructive.
